Calling Creative Teens for the 99th Annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards by December 13

Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) is once again proud to showcase the region’s brightest young creative talents as the West Central Michigan Region host of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. Each year, increasing numbers of teens participate in the program, and become a part of a special community of young artists and writers, filmmakers and photographers, poets, and sculptors, along with countless educators who support and encourage the creative process. Past award winners include such creative luminaries as poet Amanda Gorman, artist Andy Warhol, writer Sylvia Plath, and filmmaker Richard Linklater.

KCAD is calling on students from West and Central Michigan in grades 7–12 to share their creative talents and submit work for a variety of categories including architecture, ceramics and glass, comic art, design, digital art, drawing and illustration, fashion, film and animation, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, critical essay, dramatic script, flash fiction, humor, journalism, personal essay/memoir, poetry, science fiction and fantasy, and short story. Full art and writing portfolios will also be accepted.

Students in grades 7–12 in the following counties fall into the West Central Michigan Region: Allegan, Antrim, Barry, Benzie, Calhoun, Charlevoix, Chippewa, Clare, Clinton, Dickinson, Eaton, Emmet, Gratiot, Genesee, Grand Traverse, Ingham, Ionia, Iron, Isabella, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kalkaska, Kent, Lake, Leelanau, Mackinac, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, Ottawa, Roscommon, Saginaw, Shiawassee, Tuscola, Van Buren, and Wexford. If you’re unsure of which region of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards you fall into, visit artandwriting.org/regions to find your regional program.

The annual competition continues to nurture creativity in future generations by providing various opportunities for students to earn scholarships (valued $500 to $10,000) to attend summer programs and colleges nationwide.

Students who achieve special distinction at the regional level are automatically considered for national-level recognition. A total of 34 students from the West Central Michigan Region received national recognition in the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, including one National American Visions Medal (Art), seven National Gold Medals (Art), 14 National Silver Medals (Art), one National American Voices Medal (Writing), two National Gold Medals (Writing), six National Silver Medals (Writing) and three National Silver Medals with Distinction (Writing).

Entries will be accepted through December 13, 2021. A list of award recipients and their work will be posted to kcad-sawa.org on January 17, 2022. For complete details and submission guidelines, visit artandwriting.org/regions/MI003A.
