Manistee area artist Carol Marshall will host a ‘Memories of Me’ art quilt wall hanging workshop at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts (LACA) Friday and Saturday, June 4-5.

During this two-day workshop students will create an art quilt based on an important memory by stitching together bits of colorful fabrics.

Marshall will show students that sewing with small pieces of fabric can create unusual and interesting designs. Students will learn how to blend colors and prints to create shapes, images and objects. This is a wonderful way to create something artistic with texture and dimension.

This workshop is open to students (ages 16 and older) of all skill levels. Students with prior sewing experience will need to forget what they have previously learned about traditional quilt making; no straight lines and no patterns to follow.

Students are asked to bring a photograph, picture or sketch with them to interpret on cloth or create an abstract from a concept that they would want to interpret. Students can create something representational or imagined. Students will create a small quilt so that you can finish it during the two-day workshop.

Marshall will supply fabric for the workshop. Sewing machines will be available for students to use, however students are encouraged to bring their own if they would like.

Students will need to supply their own extra bobbins, a pair of good scissors or pinking shears, an Iron and extension cord. Students should also bring a sack lunch each day. Optional supplies include, sewing machine, favorite fabric pieces (solid, prints, lace, ribbon or yarn), ruler to cut straight lines, rotary cutter and cutting surface.

Cost of the workshop is $143 for LACA members and $153 for non-members. The workshop is limited to 7 students and face masks are required at all times regardless of vaccination status. To register for the workshop visit https://ludingtonartscenter.square.site/workshops or call 231-845-2787.
