Lansing area artist Laura Gajewski will host a two-part Cast Hydrostone Panel Workshop at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts (LACA) on Tuesday’s June 15 and June 22.

Hyrdrostone is an exceptionally strong gypsum cement that is traditionally used to produce high-quality, indoor novelty and statuary castings that require extremely hard, are water resistant and superior reproduction of fine detail.

Gajewski’s exhibit “Abandonings” on display in the main gallery at LACA through May 28 features a number of charcoal sketches on hydrostone.

During the workshop Gajewski will instruct participants on how to mix and pour the hydrostone into panels that can then be used as a surface for drawing, painting, collages and photo transfers.

During session one of the workshops (Tuesday, June 15 from noon to 3 p.m.) participants will cast 3 panels for use in session two (one 8”x10” and two 5”x7” panels). Gajewski will supply all the materials for creating the panels and students are encouraged to dress for a little mess.

In session two (Tuesday, June 22 from noon to 4 p.m.), students will experiment with various drawing media on hydrostone panels. For this session, students are asked to bring a variety of drawing materials and some of their favorite reference imagery.

Cost of the two-part workshop is $120 for LACA members and $130 for non-members. The workshop is limited to 10 students and face masks are required at all times regardless of vaccination status.
