The Public Libraries of Saginaw's annual Summer Reading Program, "Tails and Tales," is set to kick off next month. The free, animal-themed program will feature inspiring virtual adventures, plus a reading challenge for all ages.

Starting June 7 and running through August 7, participants can pick up age-appropriate reading records at any library branch. Four separate programs are available:

  • an early literacy program for Birth through Age 3

  • a children's program for Preschool through 6th grade

  • a teen program for students in 7th grade through 12th grade

  • and an adult program for ages 18 and up.

Participants can log time spent reading or listening to someone else read. This includes reading books, e-books, magazines, newspapers, listening to audiobooks, or reading together as a family. Prizes for completion of the program can be picked up between June 14 and August 14. All prizes are limited and subject to availability.

"It is so important for children to keep their minds active during the summer months and the Summer Reading Program is a great way to do that," Library Director Maria McCarville said. "We hope families use it as a way to encourage students to keep reading, but also spend time together."

Library staff are partnering with other community organizations to create some fun and educational events throughout the summer. Stay tuned to the library's website event calendar and social media channels for information on take and make crafts, virtual and on-location storytimes, puppet shows, and more!

As always, children under seven visiting the library must be accompanied by a responsible helper. The library requires all visitors to follow current safety guidelines.
