Lansing Art Gallery Offers Art Ability Bags to Reduce Barriers for Art Experiences

Art Has No Barriers is an art-based learning experience that engages people of all abilities.

In need of fun, monthly art activity to engage with during the summer? Join the Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center, in collaboration with All Faith Ministry for disABILITIES and Mid-Michigan Autism Association, for summer fun. Art Ability Bags are monthly take-home art projects for anyone of any age or ability and were created to keep people creative and engaged with the arts. Each Art Ability Bag will contain all the needed supplies for one person to complete a simple art project from the safety of their home.  July’s project is beach ball painting! The Art Ability Bags are free to pre-registered participants; supplies are limited. Due to recent high engagement from the community and a grant from MACC (Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC), we have increased the number of available Art Ability Bags to 60 a month! Art Ability Bags are a part of the Lansing Art Gallery and Education Center’s Art Has No Barriers program. Art Has No Barriers is an art-based learning experience that engages people of all abilities to be imaginative, creative, and confident while focusing on visual arts education and appreciation. This program was developed, in partnership with professional educator Catherine Tonning-Popowich, after recognizing a lack of arts education opportunities available for individuals with disabilities living in Mid-Michigan. For individuals with disabilities, there can be barriers to communication and understanding within their community. The process of creating art can give a voice to people who cannot communicate their thoughts and emotions in other ways, allowing them to narrate their life journeys in their own way. The program furthers the Lansing Art Gallery’s mission of promoting accessibility to ALL people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, and ability.

Art Ability Bags continue to be available once a month for pick-up from the Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center.  Registration is required, and supplies are limited.
