Midland County Historical Society Turns Back Time with Cemetery Tour of Sanford Civil War Veterans
In 1865, the American Civil War officially came to an end, the conclusion of a four-year battle over the status of slavery in the United States. Several of those civil war veterans that called Midland County their home are at the center of the upcoming guided Cemetery Tour on behalf of the Midland County Historical Society. The series of cemetery tours returns on June 18 at the Jerome Township Cemetery located in Sanford. Attendees will be guided through the cemetery while listening to the stories of late Midland County residents, as told through reenactments of local volunteers, historians and actors.
“It is our honor to be able to tell the stories of these veterans,” said Jacob Huss, Historical Programs Manager at Midland Center for the Arts. “As we continually work to learn more about our community’s ancestors, it is critical for us to share these stories of the war and ultimately what led to the county we live in today.”
The Midland County Cemetery Tours have become a staple for sharing the community’s history for the Historical Society who have held these programs in multiple throughout the area to share tales from decades of Midland County history. The Midland County Historical Society archives and programs are administered by Midland Center for the Arts, which includes a robust research library for public and personal consumption. “We at the Historical Society are continuously looking for ways to engage the community in their own history. These tours are just one of the many ways we can achieve that,” added Huss.
The Sanford Civil War Veterans Cemetery Walk will take place 1 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at the Jerome Township Cemetery, 67 W. Center St. in Sanford. Guided tours will take place every 20 minutes rain or shine. Tickets are $8, $5 for museum members.
