After 16 months, 30 virtual guest author events, and 14,000 virtual attendees from around the world, the time has finally come: The National Writers Series has announces their return to the City Opera House stage this August!

The first live event back in Downtown Traverse City will be hosted on Thursday, August 26th, at 7 pm, featuring a longtime favorites and a friend of the National Writers Series: John U. Bacon. The discussion will surround John’s newest book, Let Them Lead, introduced by #1 New York Times bestselling author and NWS co-founder, Doug Stanton.

Let Them Lead tells the story of what happened when Bacon became coach of the nation's worst high school hockey team (the Ann Arbor Huron High School River Rats, winless for over a year) and—through some unconventional coaching practices—how he helped them become one of the top teams in the nation.

A true story filled with unforgettable characters, stories, and lessons that apply to organizations and teams everywhere, Let Them Lead is a fast-paced, feel-good book that leaders of all kinds can embrace to motivate their teams to work harder, work together, and take responsibility for their own success.

Even more good news: The National Writers Series will have a virtual option available for this event as well.

Executive Director Jillian Manning said of the decision, "After 16 months of virtual events, our audience was clear: They told us they wanted to keep a virtual option for our events moving forward."

"We also found that our Zoom events opened us up to people who couldn't attend our City Opera House events in person, so we wanted to make sure that anyone who wanted to be a part of an NWS event could do so."

The National Writers Series will be following the regulations laid out by the State of Michigan, and we will be compliant with COVID-19 protocols as well as any safety measures put forth by the City Opera House.

For the John U. Bacon event, there will not be a personalized signing line. Doors will open at 6 pm with a cash bar available.

In-person tickets can be purchased for $15-25 through the City Opera House website, which now features reserved seating. Student tickets (including college students with ID) are $5 each. The Opera House box office will be open between 10 am - 2 pm Monday through Friday for phone and walk-in service.

Virtual tickets are $10.50 per household and can be purchased at the National Writers Series website. The virtual event takes place over Zoom and virtual attendees will be sent a link at registration.
