The Traverse Symphony Orchestra has just announced a new ten-year commitment between the TSO and Maestro Kevin Rhodes. Maestro Rhodes will step into a bold new role as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, harnessing his artistic energy to ensure an unlimited future for the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.

TSO Board of Directors President, Susan Cogswell, shared the announcement, “During the past twenty years, while under the direct and gifted musical leadership of Maestro Rhodes, this orchestra has grown from a comfortable community orchestra to a highly professional orchestra on par with this country’s leading orchestras. This grand achievement came with a vision and a strengthening of the orchestra that – in my opinion – only Maestro Rhodes could have, and did, achieve.”

Maestro Rhodes, who has conducted the Traverse Symphony Orchestra for the past twenty-years, reinforced his commitment to the community by relocating to Traverse City this past year, during the pandemic. According to Maestro Rhodes, “The twenty year portion of my career that I have spent as the Music Director of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra has been the most rewarding of my life. Now I find myself in the incredible position of viewing that twenty years as a mere prelude to the work I am now planning after having moved my family to live full time in Traverse City, and knowing that we have (at least!) the ten years in front of us to further develop the role of the TSO in our community.”

Maestro Rhodes’ plans for the future of the TSO include, “realizing some long held dreams of increasing the presence of live orchestral music in all its forms and permutations in the lives of the people lucky enough and blessed enough to call TC home. There are many new projects we are working on, so be watching for some exciting news!”

Cogswell added, “If the last twenty years is a harbinger of what we can expect in the next ten years with Kevin Rhodes as our Maestro hang on to your hats, batons, and trumpets, because we are all going to be in for some truly amazing musical moments in the years ahead of us.”
